ECOC 2026 in Malaga: Exhibitor Stand Screens by MEG

The 52nd European Conference on Optical Communication, ECOC 2026, opened at FYCMA in Malaga, Spain, on 20 September and ran until 24 September. ECOC is the largest and most prestigious optical communications event in Europe and the second largest in the world, and the ECOC Exhibition that runs alongside the conference is the biggest optical communications trade show on the continent.

What Brought a Congress of This Size to Malaga

ECOC moves to a different European city each year, and the 2026 edition is chaired locally by Iñigo Molina-Fernández and Robert Halir of the University of Malaga, alongside Jose Capmany and Ivana Gasulla of the Technical University of Valencia. The programme covers plenary sessions, tutorials, invited talks, workshops, symposia, a demo zone and poster sessions, spread across five days.

The venue is FYCMA, Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Malaga, at Av. de Jose Ortega y Gasset 201, in the Cruz de Humilladero district. It sits nine kilometres from Malaga airport, which is a large part of why a congress that draws delegates from across Europe, North America and Asia can land here at all.

Screens on a Trade Show Stand Are Not Screens in a Conference Room

This is the part worth being precise about, because the two jobs share a word and almost nothing else.

A conference room setup has one client, one room and one schedule. You load in, you set up, you sound check, and the first session starts. The technical programme at ECOC, with its plenaries and parallel symposia, is run by the congress technical team on exactly that model.

An exhibition hall is a different animal. Every stand belongs to a different company, was designed by a different agency and is being built by a different contractor, all at the same time, in the same hall, in the same few days. Five practical consequences follow:

1. The wall is not a given. One stand is a rented modular panel system, the next is custom carpentry, the next is a printed fabric frame on an aluminium structure. A screen bracket that is correct for one of those is wrong, and sometimes unsafe, on another. The mount has to be chosen per stand, and the wall has to be able to carry the weight.
2. You share the floor. In the photographs below you can see ladders, tool bags, stacked pallets and protective sheeting still down. Screen installation happens in the middle of carpentry, rigging, electrical work and graphics application, not after them.
3. Power and signal come last but must be planned first. The cable runs live inside a structure that already exists by the time you arrive. If nobody left a route behind the panel, you are not making one on the day.
4. The deadline is the doors, not the session. A conference screen has to work before its session. An exhibition screen has to work before the hall opens, because once visitors are on the floor you cannot bring a ladder back out.
5. Handover is to someone who is not a technician. The person who will use that screen for five days is a sales engineer with a laptop and a product demo, not an AV operator. It has to be obvious, and it has to keep working without you standing next to it.

Working Inside the Build Up Window at FYCMA

Everything you see in these photographs was shot during build up, which is why so many of the screens read No Signal and so much of the furniture is still wrapped. That is the normal state of an exhibition hall in the days before it opens, and it is the only window an equipment supplier gets.

For MEG the job was scoped around it: deliver to the right stand numbers, mount to whatever each stand was actually built from, run power and signal cleanly, then power up and leave each screen ready for the exhibitor to connect a laptop and go. Every one of those stands belongs to a company that flew its team and its product demos to Malaga for a five day show. A screen that is not live when the doors open is not a technical inconvenience, it is a lost show.

If you are taking a stand at a congress in Malaga, the single most useful thing you can do is tell your AV supplier what your stand is made of before it is built. Panel type, wall dimensions, where the power drop lands and whether the designer left a cable route. That five minute conversation is what separates a clean install from an improvised one on the morning the doors open.
